At that place in 1878 the liberated Bulgarian exiles from Diyarbakir were welcomed. The bridge was built as a symbol of freedom.
It is the work of the Czechs architects Antonin Kolar and Vaclav Proshek. The bronze eagles were made in Vienna. In 1891 they flied off in the sky over Sofia.
